How to use the decimal time calculator
Convert hours and minutes to decimal hours for timesheets, billing and reporting, or convert a decimal value back to standard hours and minutes.
7 hours 45 minutes equals 7.75 decimal hours. Conversely, 8.50 decimal hours equals 8 hours 30 minutes.
Decimal hours conversion formula
To convert minutes to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. Therefore 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75 hours.
For the reverse conversion, multiply the decimal portion by 60. For example, 8.50 hours contains 0.50 × 60 = 30 minutes, so it equals 8 hours 30 minutes.
When decimal hours are useful
Decimal hours are commonly convenient for timesheets, billing, reporting and calculations involving an hourly rate. WorkTimeCheck displays decimal values to two decimal places, while its hours-and-minutes result retains minute-level meaning.
