How to use the time duration calculator
Enter a start time and end time to calculate elapsed time in hours and minutes, decimal hours and total minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the following day.
From 8:35 AM to 5:20 PM is 8 hours 45 minutes, or 8.75 decimal hours.
How to calculate the duration between two times
The calculator converts the start and end clock times into minutes, finds the difference and converts that difference back into hours and minutes. It also reports decimal hours and total minutes so the same duration can be used in different contexts.
For example, the period from 8:35 AM to 5:20 PM is 525 minutes. Dividing and converting that value gives 8 hours 45 minutes, which is 8.75 decimal hours.
Time duration across midnight
If the end time is earlier than the start time, WorkTimeCheck assumes the end occurs on the following day. Thus 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is calculated as 8 hours rather than a negative duration.
The tool uses clock-time arithmetic and does not apply dates, time zones or daylight-saving transitions. For intervals spanning a clock change, use actual timestamps with date and time-zone information when precision depends on that transition.
Elapsed time, decimal hours and total minutes
The hours-and-minutes result is usually easiest to read, while decimal hours can be convenient for multiplication, reporting and billing. Total minutes provide an unambiguous base value. For example, 2 hours 30 minutes equals 150 minutes and 2.50 decimal hours.
Decimal hours are not hours followed by ordinary clock minutes. A duration of 2 hours 45 minutes is 2.75 decimal hours because 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75.
