How to use the work hours calculator
The work hours calculator is designed for employees, contractors and anyone who needs a fast weekly total. It supports AM/PM entries, unpaid break deductions and shifts that pass midnight.
For an overnight shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM with a 30-minute break, WorkTimeCheck calculates 7 hours 30 minutes.
Work hours calculation formula
For a normal shift, worked time equals clock-out time minus clock-in time minus any unpaid break. WorkTimeCheck performs the calculation in minutes so partial hours are handled consistently, then displays the result as hours and minutes and as a weekly total.
A 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM shift spans 8 hours 30 minutes. After a 30-minute unpaid break, the calculated work time is 8 hours. Repeat that schedule for five days and the weekly total is 40 hours.
How overnight work hours are handled
When the entered clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight. A 10:00 PM start and 6:00 AM finish therefore spans 8 hours before break deductions. With a 30-minute unpaid break, the result is 7 hours 30 minutes.
This approach is designed for ordinary wall-clock schedules. Daylight-saving clock changes and time-zone changes can make actual elapsed time different and are not modeled by the calculator.
Weekly work hours, breaks and pay estimates
Daily calculated work periods are added to obtain the weekly total. If you enter an hourly rate, the tool can also provide an estimated gross amount using its stated regular/overtime convention. The break field should contain only time that you intend to exclude from paid work.
Use these totals as calculation aids rather than payroll records. Whether a particular activity or break counts as compensable work depends on the rules that apply to the actual employment situation.
